  It was a bare and spare menu, which was a good sign, even though I wasn't enthused by anything I saw. We started with the 'old' tomatoes, which were ripe heirloom tomatoes dressed with olive oil, red onion slices, torn basil, other herbs, and a dollop of farm cheese. It was what it was - quite good, quite simple, unimaginative. The date's pork shoulder was salty good, but a bit plain, and the squash it came with was weak. My 'filet' was so perfectly cooked rare (I wasn't asked how I wanted it) that it was dark purple alive - and it was magnificent. The heirloom beans it came with were also quite good. The cheese plate was fine. The overall meal I liked very much because it was good without pretension and it didn't dumb itself down.
